 Our first Webinar

This was an exciting day for me. Alastian had a Webinar for the first time. The Report that the Economist Intelligence Unit wrote on the challenges for our industry to keep competitive was in my view a good start for a fruitful discussion. It is interesting to see that many people from various backgrounds enlisted for the Webinar and actively participated. Questions came in from all directions and good feedback was received afterwards, so I hope this is the first of many interactions with Industry experts, Customers, and other interested parties.

It is of course unsatisfactory that the technical part did not work the way we planned, so the slides were not visible and the questions had to be submitted via email rather then on-line as we planned, but I tend to see things positively and see hick-ups like this as opportunities to improve on next time. I am pleased to see that there is such an interest in a debate around the future of our Industry and that so many parties make an effort to contribute to this discussion. I hope that the discussion will continue, either via this Blog, or with more Webinars in the future!

I felt I should write an e-mail in response to the very interesting and informative webinar this morning. I am the editor responsible for polypropylene at Platts and would like to add that our price assessments could be made even more accurate through increased co-operation from the industry. Our long term aim is to one day move towards an MOC window for the polyolefins spot market, such as we have for other petrochemicals, which will increase transparency and bring added stability to a volatile market.

kind regards,

William Bathurst

Though I am a former colleagues of the organsisers and thus biased, I really thought the discussion yesterday was a very good one. The three speakers were all of good quality and their presentations and the ensuing discussion was decidedly entertaining. Working in China myself – I am very interested to hear more on the topic of interregional dynamics. And specifically the influence of new ,low cost feedstock, suppliers entering the market with a vengeance the coming years. Many people talk about it – but I have yet to hear anyone push the typical vagaries aside an really express a firm view (such as “In 2015 – half of Europe’s current production assets will have been shut down and only five domestic producers will still be in business”).

So – please keep the debate going and give us more!
